Rio Baker float trip
8 days Floating Through Patagonia
Moderate
Lodging in mobile camps
From US$2300 pp(all inclusive)
November through May.
Highlights
The rio Baker is at the centre of the plot - 1100
cubic meters (29700 cfs) per second of clean water, half of it coming
from the huge General Carerra lake, the other half coming from glaciers
fed by the northern Patagonian Ice Field. We gently float, at the natural
pace of the river, until we spill out into the Pacific at Caleta Tortel.
This is historically the most significant journey in the region, though
seldom done any more. The history and culture of Aysen are literally
marked in the rock faces we pass and the houses we visit. This is a
journey for nature lovers who enjoy a natural, gentle pace to their
travelling through magnificent scenery with some unique touches of culture
and adventure.
Day 1
Arrive in Balmaceda Airport, meet your guides and drive along the Southern Highway to Puerto Bertrand, situated on the General Carrera Lake. Welcome dinner with the rest of the group.
Day 2
Morning drive to Cochrane. After preparing rafts, we begin the float trip South towards the ocean and camp by one of the few remaining traditional cableway rafts.
Day 3
We experience some good class 3 rapids and view some amazing Patagonian sceneries. We camp at the Salton Baker , an un-runable class 6 gorge.
Day 4
The day is dedicated to exploring the gorge and the exploratory tunnels cut by Lucas Bridge, an early explorer of the region who opened up the Colonia valley for farming in the late nineteen thirties.
Day 5
After launching rafts immediately below the powerful 'Salton' Fall, the
river meanders through increasingly verdant forests. We camp on the river
bank in the Lago Vargas area.
Day 6
We continue the float out and meet the Pacific ocean. We visit the Island of the dead, a cemetery with a dark history dating back to the first explorations of the area. Arriving in Caleta Tortel, a small fishing town built on stilts we celebrate our arrival.
Day 7
Return journey from Tortel to Puerto Tranquilo, a quite village situated on the shores of lago General Carrera.
Day 8
Early morning drive (or Charter flight) to Balmaceda airport for the flight out.
from US$2300 pp
