Guiding & Operations Team

Ian Farmer

Ian arrived in Chile in 1987 to teach ski mountaineering to students from Santiago. A 3 month volunteer job turned into a 16 year stay. Ian fell in love with the Aysen region that same year and after running CEAL, Chiles pioneering Outdoor Education centre for 8 years and guiding throughout Chile, moved to Coyhaique - Patagonia where he now lives on a small farm, in a straw bale house with Jacqueline and their 3 children – Calum, Luke and Holly.

Christine Sbolgi

Christine first came to Patagonia as an interpreter, she speaks 5 languages, is a sailor, chef and mother of Alizée whom she named after the trade winds that carried her from Europe.
It is Christine who you are most likely to have contact with before coming to Patagonia.

Jonathan Leidich

Twelve years ago Jonathan came to Patagonia with a map of the continent, a climbing partner and a bag of gear. On descending to the valley they stopped at Sol de Mayo, fell in love with the place and then dedicated several years to getting the company going and ultimately to creating the Aysen Glacier Trail which passes right through Sol de Mayo.

Juan Pablo Castillo

Born and raised in Patagonia with 10 years of mountaineering, skiing and boating behind him JP, after trying elsewhere, has decided he has the best of all wilderness on his doorstep. JP is head guide and coordinates field operations from Puerto Bertrand.

Toby Mogavero

Toby, after serving in the US military came to Chile looking for a complete change in life and found it building the Aysen Glacier Trail. So much time out on the trail with a shovel and time gave him an insight into the place that few others have. Toby now guides the trail and maintains the route.

Ben Martin

After years of guiding big rivers like the Futaleufu, Ben moved a little further south to fulfil his dream of combing big river trps with wilderness horseback travel. When back in the US he guides the Grand Canyon and builds houses.

Yoanni Aratia

Yoani, born and raised in Tortel, at the mouth of the rio Baker, is most naturally at home on the water and ice of his native Aysen. Yoani has more time on the Aysen Glacier Trail and rio Baker than anyone else.
